Basic Sail Training:
This course is an experience for those who wish to sample sailing in
more depth than the 'Introduction to Sailing" course.
Participants are introduced to basic sail handling, marine charts,
basic navigation, obtaining weather forecasts, and
tide
and current calculations. On successful completion of the
basic course, participants will be able to act as crew in small boats,
confidently and
safely, in local waters by day in moderate weather condtions. The
course
is an ideal next step in sailing development and creates a sound base
for
even further development if required. The next level is Competent Crew, which carries a certification
recognised by charter companies when considering you as part of a group
on a bareboat charter.
The boats used for training are
Cal
20's, (pictured above), a fine all weather day sailer, or the Catalina
27. These boats are also available
for individual use by succesful Competent Crew course
participants through our
clubsail program , for practice and sailing enjoyment without the
hassles of boat ownership!
The sailing takes place in Oak Bay, which has challenging currents,
rock hazards, and varying wind conditions. An ideal training
ground!
Course structure:
Courses consist of a minimum 10
hours of training, normally divided into two five hour
sessions on
successive
days, including an introduction to the supporting knowledge
mentioned
above. There are two students with an instructor on each boat, to
ensure
personal "hands on" involvement.
For course dates see the course
calendar.
