Introduction to Sailing:
This 4 hour course is an experience for those who wish to sample
sailing with a view to deciding to undergo further training, or just to
enjoy a half day instruction on the water.
Participants are introduced to the processes of sailing a small
cruising
boat, safety equipment, preparing for sailing, sail selection and sail
trim, points of sail, and leaving and approaching the dock. On
completion. participants will have a good idea if sailing is a
recreational option for the future!
The next level of training can be the Basic
Sail course, for
those interested in local day sailing, or the Competent
Crew course,
for those who wish to undergo training leading to certification for
bareboat chartering, or perhaps, boat ownership. Both of these courses
are "entry level" so no previous experience is required, and it is not
necessary to do both, as The Competent Crew course contains the Basic
course syllabus.
. The boats used for training are
Cal
20's, (pictured above), a fine all weather day sailer, and/or the
Catalina
27. These boats are also available
for individual use by succesful Competent Crew
course participants through our
clubsail program , for practice and sailing enjoyment without the
hassles of boat ownership!
The sailing takes place in Oak Bay, which has challenging currents,
rock hazards, and varying wind conditions. An ideal training
ground!
